Glenwood Uncorked

Have you ever walked into an art gallery and been fixated on a painting that you stare at in the hope that you could be transported to that exact moment? If so, then Glenwood would be the place. If not, then entering at the Glenwood gate would give you pretty much the same feeling. A humble boutique vineyard set between two mountains may be part of the recipe that makes Glenwood’s so successful. That coupled with their wine making veteran DP Burger who has been turning grapes into wine for 26 years.

Driving up to the tasting room and restaurant I couldn’t help stopping every 5 meters and pulling my camera out. It was as if I was in a virtual world. With the harvest over and the seasons changing the orange and brown hues seem to stretch as far as the eye can see.

The small valley that Glenwood is situated on is definitely a gold mine of soil. The grapes grown on the estate are the only ones used in any of their labels. From the lease to the bottle it is 100% Glenwood, sticking to their credo of “simple, natural, quality.”

I was pleasantly surprised at the quaint venue. With the number of awards and listings that Glenwood have it is refreshing that unlike a few very popular wine farms that are forever changing to stay current, Glenwood believes that the love, passion, sense of community development and farming have always been the award winning combination.

As you enter into the reception, the typically South African finishes, warm wooden textures and walls of awards let me know that pride is taken in everything this estate does.

At this point you have a few options of activities. I choose to enter straight through those doors for the cellar tour. Please see the times below as to avoid disappointment.

Glenwood has become a leading wine producer and exporter to more than 12 countries. With so much impact, it is admirable that Glenwood always have the environment in mind. With a section of land dedicated to the regeneration of Fynbos (an indigenous plant variety) and  using only environmentally friendly products while farming. Here is the wine list that Glenwood has to offer. I am a huge Chardonnay lover and I was incredibly excited to hear that they had 3 under the Glenwood label.

The Glenwood Range:

Sauvignon Blanc 2015 – Chardonnay Unoaked 2015

Merlot 2013 – Merlot/Shiraz 2013 – Shiraz Vigneron’s Selection 2014

Chardonnay Vigneron’s Selection 2014 – Semillon Vigneron’s Selection 2013 – Grand Duc Chardonnay 2013

Grand Duc Syrah 2012

After an informative tour of the cellars and tasting experience from the barrels, it was time for lunch. The boutique bistro offers perfectly paired food that complements the prestigious wines that Glenwood has to offer. The lunch time hot spot comfortably seats 40 people, all of the tables are outside so be prepared for a picture perfect view as you are both wined and dined.

Glenwood is a family orientated estate and has a selection of kids favourites too. The menu is seasonal and definitely packed with natures bounty. It was hard to choose from the mouth watering selection but everything I had I would definitely recommend!

Franschhoek smoked trout with capers, red onion and crisp short crust crackers

Slow roasted pork belly, fried green vegetables tossed with mustard mash and an apple, ginger, chilli sauce

Chocolate Fondant with a berry yoghurt and fresh raspberries

Rendezvous Bistro

Open daily 11am – 3pm. Booking advised.

Please note we will be closed from 2nd July – 31st July, re-opening on 1st August 2016.

After enjoying the lunch of champions, I was excited to wonder through to the wine sales section where you can sit and enjoy a wine tasting or browse through the visitors book. It was lovely to see all the positive comments about peoples experiences at the estate and how people have traveled from far and wide to enjoy the Glenwood grapes.

Well done to the team of this amazing boutique estate, you are definitely doing wonderful things! Remaining true to the original  philosophy of what sets them apart, it is an outstanding concept set for a really fun day out. Here is how to contact them to book your visit:
