Best Gin Bar in Town at Asara

We are absolutely spoilt for choice when it comes to where to wine and dine with the most incredible vistas. A mere 25km’s from Cape Town International Airport, it completely transports you to a world of rolling hills, perfectly manicured land and award winning wines. Asara wine estate ticks all of the boxes when it comes to a perfect day out in the famous wine country.

If the welcome board at Asara has a list of their awards and accolades you would see the countless badges commending their 5 star excellent accommodation, Travels Choice awards from Trip Advisor and long existing partnership with Fairtrade to name a few. These are just some of the awards that make sure Asara is being recognised for their excellence in Hospitality, Tourism and of course wine.

The gorgeous Tuscan style exterior gives an old world feeling to the premises and seems to instil the old world value system too. Everyone is warm, friendly and very attentive.

Once parked you can make your way down to reception or have a wonder around the grounds…you are always bound to find a gem at Asara.

Once you have met with one of the friendly staff and heard what’s on offer you can plan your route to ensure you aren’t missing out on a single activity. We began with a walk through the gorgeous courtyard which immediately brought back memories of my trips to Europe. The sun beaming down, the fresh country breeze and the change of season may be the essential ingredients to unwinding with a glass of the estates finest.

The tasting room is open daily from 10h00 till 17h00 from Mondays – Saturdays and 10h00 till 16h00 on Sundays and Public Holidays. Tours of the wine cellar are offered by appointment from Monday to Friday at 11h00 or 15h00 and I would definitely recommend this as a personal experience with one of the cellar masters which will make the experience more personal.

The tasting room is situated overlooking the cellar and gives you an intimate tasting experience where you can get familiar with some of the estates stars. Producing exceptional wines has always been at the forefront of what Asara prides themselves on and this is apparent in every sip, every label and every vintage that has a near and dear place on the wine cabinet in the tasting room.

The cellar below is also used as a closely acquainted event space where a gorgeous long table can be set up for wine tastings, corporate team builders or special occasions.

Asara has four main collections that the wines are split between. The Speciality, Vineyard, Pickled Fish and Cape Vineland collections each have around 7-8 labels in each tier. You can head over to the website by clicking the link to assess which one you would like to taste – https://www.asara.co.za/wine/ranges.html

After getting familiar with the wines, a stroll back to the main courtyard had us stumbling upon the Asara confectionery and delicatessen where you can purchase freshly baked goods for the day or have a scoop or two from the ice cream trolley parked near the bell tower.

On a day like this, who could resist?!

As I said before, you could walk around without a plan and stumble onto a few gems…just look at the pool! You could leave me here for the day…

From the Tuscan exterior to the Greek style minimalist interior of the gorgeous destination restaurant mise en place, is the newly opened (October 2016) diamond at Asara. The gorgeous interior, clean white linen, spacious floor plan and tasteful art work makes this a restaurant for you to celebrate your next milestone at.

Sophisticated dining with a relaxed atmosphere and elegant service is the wining combination that has mise en place being noticed by many top restaurant critics.

The restaurant is open from Tuesday to Saturday evenings from 6pm onwards but no table will be seated later than 8pm. Reservations are highly recommended and you can contact them on +27 21 888 8000 to make a booking.

On gorgeous Summer evenings, and a few recent ones as somehow Winter will just not grace us with her chilly presence, you can choose to be seated on the terrace that offers a spectacular infinity pool sensation over the lake.

If it is a little earlier in the day then the Sansibar Restaurant is the inerrant place to be. The casual, bistro-style dining area offers a selection of traditional classics and popular favourites on the menu. With a long list of fantastic pizzas and flatbreads baked in the specialised oven as well as a choice of chicken, beef, salmon etc leaving you freed to decide what your taste buds fancy.

If you have a sweet tooth then look no further than the sweets on offer at Sansibar. I went for the classic Apple Tart Tatin and …. yes I was speechless!

Once you have had an incredible meal, finished it off with something sweet there is very little in this world you may still desire. But I am sure if you follow your senses inside you will see the glittering sparkle of almost 280 Gin bottles. These Gins make up the affectionately known Gin lounge and boasts gin from all over the world.
